Retirement

Retirement in America is changing - and so are the financial risks.

  • Longevity - Compared to past generations, we are living longer and healthier in retirement, so you will need an income stream that lasts longer too.
  • Inflation - Historically, the average inflation rate is over 3%.  Over a long retirement, that can significantly lower your purchasing power.
  • Market Volatility - Equities have historically helped retirees keep pace with inflation.  But the market has proven unpredictable, and your income shouldn't be.

The Key Formula for Retirement:  Make Sure Income is Greater Than Expenses.

As we live longer, this longevity comes with financial challenges, meaning a longer retirement planning horizon.  Where will your retirement income come from?  If you are like most people, qualified retirement plans, Social Security, and personal savings and investments are expected to play a significant role. Once you have estimated the amount of money you may need for retirement, a sound approach involves taking a close look at your retirement income sources.  We assist you with when and how to retire; when to take Social Security; how to build a retirement income stream that will last the rest of your life; what assets to draw on and in what order; and other important decisions and considerations.  However, even in retirement, you still need growth.  Growth is needed to combat the financial issues of longevity as well as inflation.  We assist you in identifying what assets are designated to deliver income for life's necessities, what assets provide for your desires and what assets can deliver growth to ensure that your assets will last as long as you do.

A "Retirement Plan" and "Income Plan" are the foundation of each client relationship.  They help define where we are going, how we are going to get there, keep us on the right road, and what milestones are important along the way.  It is important to identify a client's resources and then construct a plan to decide what resources are going to perform what function in the overall plan.  Functions include income, growth, protection, volatility dampening, diversification, etc.  It is critical we have different assets performing different functions to enable a client's assets last as long as they do.
